From Dead.net:

Lost But Now Found - Unveiling Dave's Picks Volume 6

We're really bad at keeping secrets around here so just imagine how hard it's been for us to contain our excitement about the 2 now-complete shows, once missing reels for more than 40 years, that have been selected to make up Dave's Picks Volume 6. The first major return of material to the vault since 2005's Houseboat Tapes, Dave's Picks Volume 6 will feature never-before-heard material from 2/2/70 Fox Theater, St. Louis, MO and 12/20/69 Fillmore Auditorium, San Francisco, CA. Long a mystery, the riddle of the 2/2/70 set list has now been solved and the music restored to its proper - and spectacular - sequence. 2/2/70 is also notable as Tom Constanten had just left the band. Tom, however, makes his return to give his first-hand perspective on 12/20/69 in this volume's liner notes. Pigpen fiends, ask and you shall receive. Both shows feature loads of Pigpen including a major 35+ minute "Lovelight" from 12/20/69. Recorded by Bear with an excellent mix and sound quality, this very special release feels like a return to the classics.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard music, includes one of only three versions of "Smokestack Lightning" from 1969. You most certainly won't want to miss out on this highly collectible Dead!

The only way to guarantee you'll get these historic releases is to get a Dave's Picks 2013 subscription. The subscription offer ends January 22, 2013 at 11:59PM PST, so grab one while you can!

(From me: they coyly don't mention it, but 12/20/69 has one of the "lost" Dark Stars. That means TWO Dark Stars on one release!]

From deadbase -

12/20/69: Mason's Children ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider ; High Time ; Me & My Uncle ; Hard To Handle ; Cumberland Blues ; Black Peter ; Second Set: Dark Star > St. Stephen > The Eleven > New Speedway Boogie > Turn On Your Love Light [MAMU through St Stephen were missing]

12/21/69, missing first half: Smokestack Lightnin ; New Speedway Boogie ; Mama Tried ; Dire Wolf ; Mason's Children ; China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider

2/2/70: full setlist still unknown, but the show also ended with a Lovelight.

It's very likely I'll buy this as a single release, if the subscription doesn't sell out, but I feel like they're baiting me, uncomfortably so. All I can imagine is the ghost of Garcia shaking its head.

Is it impossible to buy this release on its own? It would really piss me off if that were the case.

You can purchase the DP6 with the 2/2/70 and 12/20/69 as a single purchase. However Dave's Picks are limited edition releases (13,000 this year, I think). I assume that this number includes all purchased by subscription so if subscriptions are higher then there won't be a lot available for single purchase. Last year you could purchase all 4 releases on their own, however they all sold out. It seemed like the last two sold out pretty quick after they were made available.

I believe the Dave's Pick itself can be purchased on its own, the bonus disc of 70/02/02 will be available only to subscribers.

I think the subscriber only disc will be 12/21/69 not 2/2/70 if I'm reading this correctly.

You can still sign up for the 2013 Dave's Picks subscriptoon(until Jan 22nd), but not for previous years...

From my understanding it's not possible to get any of last year's releases at this point, but you can still get a subscription for this year. http://www.dead.net/store/music/live-shows/daves-picks-2013-subscription

As long as the subscription doesn't sell out before Jan 22, you'll be able to buy #6 on its own when it comes out, but without the bonus disc.
Since, according to the blurb, the bonus disc will be 12/21/69 (less than 40 minutes of it "new," so probably a less-than-earth-shaking disc), you probably won't be missing that much if you don't get the subscription.

Actually I'm surprised it hasn't sold out yet. 13,000 didn't seem like that high a number.
And if you miss out, well, deadheads are renowned for copying things for each other...

Now that we know some of the release details, of course I have to wonder what recovered reels DIDN'T get picked! I think Lemieux said there were "about 15-16 reels that contained about 10 hours of uncirculated music." The 2/11/70 first show is the only other one we know about so far.

I was posting this at the same time as you. This should make the "earlier is better" crowd happy.

If this is a "final choice" then so be it, i hope these performances are better compared to the Road Trips 05/15/70 electric sets, i have a difficult time listening to "vintage" dead, August 1971 -> backward time travel.

There was a mention of a Dave's Picks 1978 release this year and the Nashville 04/22/78 snippet at Tapers Section this week is some mighty fine playing.
